Hotel Kviknes
Originally popularised in the late 19th century by German and British aristocracy, Scottish fishermen and painters who came for the magnificent light reflected on the Sogne, the hotel is still owned and run by descendants of the founding family.  Built on a promontory overlooking the fjord, it is the centrepiece of the tiny village of Balestrand, one of whose features is a replica Anglican Church originally commissioned by an English woman to appease her father for having married a Viking!
• Bar • Lift in the new wing • Live music six nights a week in high season • Restaurant overlooking the fjord • Sauna and fitness centre • Small boat marina • Own beach
