The Faroe Islands - The Classic Circle
The Faroe Islands form an 18-piece jigsaw adrift in the north Atlantic between Iceland and Scotland and is a place where old traditions and customs are still upheld. The Classic Circle self-drive tour introduces you to spectacular scenery comprising of soaring cliffs and a coastline sculptured by the unrelenting onslaught of the sea, as well as the unique nature and rich cultural history that inhabit these islands.
Day 1 Vagar
Fly to Vagar Airport and pick up your hire car before exploring the island of Vagoy. We recommend you visit the small village of Gasadalur, enjoy the impressive view over Tindholmur and don’t miss the beautiful waterfall that runs in to the ocean. Overnight in Vagoy.
Day 2 Eysturoy
Make your way north to the island of Eysturoy. Along the way you could take boat trip to the Vestmanna birdcliffs. Continue to Tjornuvik, surrounded by steep mountains and see the impressive Giant and the Witch. Then travel on to beautiful surroundings of Eidi which enjoys a wonderful view of Slaettaratindur, Faroes highest mountain. Overnight in Eysturoy.
Day 3 Eysturoy
Enjoy a day in Gjogv, known for its unique natural harbour. Maps detailing local hikes are available in the village hotel. Overnight in Eystruoy.
Day 4 Northern Islands
Drive through the sub-sea tunnel to the town of Klaksvik. From here it is possible to explore the other Northern Islands. Viday has the most Northern village in the Faroes, stop off for a meal at the local restaurant. Overnight Northern Islands.
Day 5 Torshavn
We recommend a visit to the island of Kunoy where there is a beautiful panoramic view of the island of Kalsoy and where legend has it a plank from Noah’s Ark lies high up on the mountain. Back on Eysturoy, you will visit a private home in Soldarfjordur for coffee and cake. Overnight in Torshavn.
Day 6 Sandoy
Visit the island of Sandoy, also called the Saga Island. It has a wealth of history and some wonderful nature. You’ll take the ferry from Gamlaraett to Skopun then drive through and stop at the colourful villages of Dalur, Husavik and Skalavik before returning to Torshavn. Overnight in Torshavn.
Day 7 Vagoy
Spend the day in Torshavn. Do not miss the village of Kirkjubour, which is the Faroe Islands historical and cultural centre. The farm here is home to a family who have lived there for 17 generations. Overnight in Vagoy.
Day 8 UK
Return your rental car to the airport before returning to the UK.
