Gotland - Sweden's Summer Secret

Gotland is one of Sweden’s best kept secrets. Wander the walled UNESCO World Heritage Site of Visby, classified as one of the best preserved medieval Hanseatic towns. See the mysterious Raukars on Fårö, which is also the former home of Ingmar Bergman, the acclaimed Swedish director and writer. Days on Gotland pass in an idyllic haze of soft sandy beaches and pristine nature. Complete your trip with a break in Stockholm.

Day 1 Visby
Fly to Visby (via Stockholm). Pick up your hire car and check into the Clarion Hotel Wisby for 3 nights. The hotel is situated within the walled city and boasts a unique history and atmosphere. It has been run as a hotel since the 1800’s but there are vaulted ceilings and columns that date back to 1200.
Day 2 Gotland
Explore the medieval city of Visby; surrounded by a 3km wall dating back to the 13th century and still with 27 of its 29 towers remaining. Visby’s cultural heritage and charm is reflected throughout the cobbled streets. The whole island is a nature reserve and the car affords you the flexibility to explore further.  Deserted sandy beaches beckon or call on one of the islands 90 ancient churches.
Day 3 Fårö
We strongly recommend taking the free ferry (5 mins) to Fårö. Former home of Ingmar Bergman. Explore the rocky western edge and the soft sandy beaches of the eastern side. A must is Langhammers beach and the ‘Raukars’, eerily fashioned natural limestone monoliths dating back several ice ages.
Day 4 Stockholm
Return your hire car before taking the short flight to Stockholm. Self-transfer to the First Hotel Reisen for 2 nights. Originally built in 1760, this is a cosy and charming ‘home from home’. Rooms have views of the Old Town alleys or waterfront, some boast Jacuzzis and balconies. The popular bar and restaurant have a traditional Swedish focus and the small spa is located in a historic vault, which forms part of the old city wall.
Day 5 Stockholm.
Grand public buildings and palaces show off an illustrious 700 year old history, celebrated in the city’s many museums. Stroll through this picturesque city built on and surrounded by over 20,000 islands. Visit the Vasa Museum which houses the only almost fully intact 17th century ship (included), dance at the ABBA museum or check out fantastic views from Skansen, Stockholm’s open-air museum and zoo. Make sure you try the famous kanalbulle (cinnamon buns) and Räksmörgås (shrimp sandwich).
Day 6 UK
Savour your last day in the ‘Capital of Scandinavia’ before returning to the airport and your flight home.
